A local patch of shared ground.

“Pick a little but leave a lot.”

The Garden motto. Everything grown here is free to the whole community.

What began as a neighbourhood idea in 2008 was planted for real in 2012, on a green field in Bunya Park with the support of Lake Macquarie City Council and local volunteers. The founders' philosophy still shapes everything here: no fences, open to the public day and night, local people growing things for local people.

There are no fences and no gates. The Garden is open to everyone, all day, every day, and everything grown here is freely available to the community. Local Garden Volunteers gather each Wednesday morning and on the second Saturday of the month to raise seedlings, turn compost and catch up over morning tea around 10:00 am, sometimes with home-baked goodies on the table!

We garden gently and organically, with no harsh chemicals or sprays: we grow our own seedlings in the propagation shed, make our own compost and water the beds with stored rainwater. But we are a community before we are anything else. People come from all walks of life, some for the growing, some for the company, most for both, and for a few of us it is less about the vegetables than the laughs and the friendships, the kind of camaraderie you would find at a good local sporting club.

You do not need to know a thing about gardening to join in, and nobody is going to interview you at the gate (there is no gate!). There is no roster and no obligation, just come along when it suits you to one of our Working Bees, held each Wednesday morning and on the second Saturday of the month.

Come down and get involved

How the Garden grew.

  • 2008

Neighbours in the Warners Bay community first raise the idea of a shared garden and go looking for the right patch of ground.

  • 2012

The Garden is planted on a green field in Bunya Park with the support of Lake Macquarie City Council, and has been run entirely by volunteers ever since. True to the founders' vision, it has never had a fence: the Garden belongs to the public, around the clock.

  • 2019/2020

Water-saving wicking beds arrive, funded through Hunter Water’s Love Water program and built by our own Garden Volunteers. A plaque beside the bed explains how they save water.

  • 2021/2022

A Propagation Shed was built by Garden Volunteers with a Lake Macquarie City Council grant, so there is always a tray of seedlings coming on for the beds.

  • 2023/2024

With the support of our local State MP, we successfully applied for a NSW Government grant to generate and store solar power to run our garden equipment and help reduce the Garden’s carbon footprint.
